Krohn are a small family-owned Port house run by brother and sister Jose and Iolanda Carneiro. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house and each wine excels in its category. The Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho, in the Rio Torto valley, is all A grade vineyard. Vinification takes place here, with some of the top wines still being trodden by foot. All the wines are matured in cellars at Villa Nova de Gaia.
Impressive black colour. Concentrated aromas of ripe fruit. Full-bodied and fleshy. Well balanced, ripe tannins. Long, sweet finish.
Deep ruby black with narrow purple rim. A nose of wonderfully pure, vibrant red fruit, with crisp aromas of cranberry, raspberry and cherry and lively notes of plum and apricot. Emerging in turn from behind this curtain of fresh fruit are spicy aromas of black pepper and nutmeg, warm notes of mocha and scents of cedar wood and balsamic herbs. In contrast, the palate is voluptuous, with dense, mouth filling tannins providing both body and firmness and a thick coulis of black woodland fruit that flows into the endless finish. Although the first impression is of an ethereal purity, the wine develops an intricate complexity in the glass and displays the powerful but beautifully integrated tannins which are a hallmark of the vintage.
Brick red colour. Rich nose of sultanas, dried apricot and lovely rich raspberry; mellow with a touch of spice. On the palate an explosion of butterscotch, hazelnut and macadamia nuts, with soft undertones of spice and cinnamon. Very balanced wine with a generous finish.
Dark blue, nearly black in colour. Mulberry and dark woodland fruit. Delicate cedary and floral scents are set against a well-defined fruity background of blackcurrant and plum. The deceptively supple middle palate gives way to a long finish, revealing firm well integrated tannins. A beautifully balanced wine, understated and harmonious, justifying the house’s reputation as a master of the Port blend.
